Big, big, love

I'm going away for a week in a few hours, so I'm posting anything new to keep my adoring fans (all 3 of you) going until my return.

Also - go take a look at the work of brand new (within minutes in fact) blogging pal Bobby Chiu.
Wonderful work to say the least.

Mind Your Head

Blood and guts.
This was on drawingboard.org for a while in the Swords and Sorcery thread in the superhero section.
Those comic types are pretty keen on anatomy and perspective and some pretty traditional values (not that I think there's anything wrong with that as such) and this didn't really much feedback.
I think its nice!

More Quentin Blake

I've been rabbiting on in the post below about Quentin Blake.
Going through his website I found an interview and a diagram showing how he completes his work.
In brief, he draws his image, pops in onto a lightbox then traces it onto watercolour paper.
Perhaps it's because I prefer to use great whopping thick pieces of paper, but I find it surprising that he's able to see anything through it.
Am I being completely naive here or is this a common enough thing?

Barnyard

I've never lived on a farm, but I live in the countryside these days.
These are all animals I enjoy.

When I was a kid one of my major influences was a comic strip called Footrot Flats, drawn by a fellow called Murray Ball.
I mention this as there's been a lot of talk about Ronald Searle on both drawingboard.org and also on the blog rounds.
Murray Ball worked with Ronald Searle on Punch for a while during the 60s, before he returned to New Zealand to do Footrot Flats.
He was very very much influenced by Searle.
FF is set on a New Zealand farm and the humour in it is very NZ/Aussie (I actually didn't realise it was a NZ strip until my teens).
Anyway - the best examples of his work I can find are here .
It's just a fan site and the link is to the character section.
Below each strip is a "next" button leading to the next character.
I hope some folks take a squizz.

I'd also like to thank Cara Carmina for providing links at her very handy blog to the websites of the always delightful Eric Carle who has been creating amazing illustrations as long as I can remember (about 30 years) and even more so for the link to Quentin Blake, an illustrator who has been a huge influence on my work since I was 5.
Thank you Cara!

I had a pal who had a bunch of goats living behind his house.
We used to go out and feed them oranges.
I have no idea whatsoever why we fed them oranges in particular.
There is a local restuarant that serves smoked goat ribs when they are available.
It's making my mouth water merely thinking about it.

Also.
Someone anonymously posted this on my Tom Hanks comments space -
"ah! the man comes thru.
good for not being a fan of cheap, mapless chocs, I say!
why do I see "vibrator"? "
If anyone can shed any light on this I'd be interested to know what the hell it means.

Pussy Cats

I'm going away for 10 days so I'm trying to post a bit before I go.
Here are some kittys.
I prefer dogs, but cats are fun to draw. Posted by Picasa

More Ancient Art

Most of this stuff I've not even looked at since I put it to floppy disk (10 years ago).
That's right.
FLOPPY DISK!!!
I've only found them again because there was a box of unlabelled disks lurking at the bottom of my porfolio (something else I've not opened in years).
I can't say I'm especially fond of them but it is an eerie thought that I've been friends with Adobe that long...Posted by Picasa

It's entirely possible that this is the first finished piece I ever did in Illustrator.... Posted by Picasa

Archives

Now this is old, old stuff.
This selection are amongst first finished pieces I ever did in Illustrator.
I'm pleased to say that they're just about 11 years old.
I'm not sure how I feel about them.
Illustrator make is very easy to create a very particular look.
I guess in their day these were really fresh and new but these days its a look you can find all over the place. Posted by Picasa

Karl - the Gentleman Pirate

Oooh arr

UPDATE -
I've just had one of the sales reps here ask me if Buddah was involved in terrorism.
I said, "You mean like the religion?"
And he said, "Yes".
So I said, "Yeah, heaps, Buddah and his followers are dangerous people".
Sheesh.Posted by Picasa

Tom Hanks is a liar

Tom Hanks is notoriously hard to caricature.
He often loses a lot of weight for his roles, and seems like such an easygoing fellow in public that it's hard to pin down a meaningful likeness.
This is a quick rough one that captured his blobby face and floppy lips well enough for me just now.
In the awful film Forrest Gump, he says, "Life's like a box of chocolate, you never know what your going to get".
Well that's a bunch of crap.
Almost all chocolate boxes have that little map they put in the box so you know exactly what you're getting.
So that's just a bunch of shit.
Fucking stupid Forrest Gump - go to hell. Posted by Picasa

Some Guy

Some guy at the drawingboard wanted a caricature.
No idea who he is, although his personal info indicated he was in Israel.
This is exactly what my hair would look like if I let it grow. Posted by Picasa

Uli Meyer

Art and animation folk will find heaps of great stuff over at Uli's blog.
I had requested a picture of him so he could be caricatured.
You can find the original picture at his blog if you'd like to compare.
UPDATE
Speaking of animation, on Donnachadas blog, I found a link to the work of a chap called Bill Peet.
Bill Peet was a story guy at Disney and illustrated many childrens books which were a huge influence on me as a child.
If you don't know his work please follow the link to discover more. Posted by Picasa
