It's staggering to behold that fella's 'drawings' truly awful. I can only put it down to rampant American delusion! It's sad because I think underneath it he believes he's paying tribute to Hirschfeld rather than plagiarising-which is fine but he crosses the LINE when he makes money off it.
Great comments on the Drawn site. It's just plain sad that someone would devote so much time and effort to TRY and replicate the work of their MUCH greater namesake. Common sense or artistic credibility would sure have suggested that avoidance would have been the best tact. There are a great many artists (and I'm including actors and musicians) who have changed their names to avoid association with a more recognized contemporary, despite perhaps out-shining them. David Bowie and Michael Caine are examples that immediately spring to mind. Yoko Ono is currently fighting to protect the name "Lennon" for the same reason. We also all know that "Oasis" are heavily influenced by the "Beatles"; but it would be a similar outrage if they went by a Beatle-esque name. Artistic flavour is created by absorbing multiple influences and putting your own interpretation on them. This guy is just tragic.
Cheers Richard. I think that this Matt feller is deluded and immature more than anything else. Someone noted on that thread that because of his slaving to this notion of being "next in line" (which seems to be celebrating in the death of Hirshfeld Snr) that's he not able to function properly as a creator. He clearly has some talent, although it's pointed in utterly the wrong direction.
My name is Elliot Cowan.
I used to draw in Australia, then I went to draw in London. Now I draw in New York City.
I'm the creator and director of The Stressful Adventures of Boxhead and Roundhead, an animated series that's played at film festivals world wide.
I do a bunch of other things that you can find at www.elliotelliotelliot.com
