I Am Not Me

This is me (and evil baby).
Elliot Cowan.
Or am I???
I discovered a few days ago that in fact, officially, I am Elliot Cohen.

My father, born a Cohen, was adopted by a Glaswegian family, also called Cohen, but went by the name Cowan (a common Scottish name).
This was presumably to detract from any Jewishness.
It wasn't until I got my British passport and had a look at the papers my father had to supply that I even knew.
As all his identification said he was a Cowan, except for his birth certificate, when he applied for his own passport 10 years ago, he changed his name officially by deed poll to Cowan so it all matched.
So in reality, I'm not a Cowan at all!

Wow, sounds like you're going to have a lot of catching up to do so that you can become a Nice Jewish Boy!

JAG - Maybe so!

Red - I've always been a nice Jewish boy! I just haven't had an especially Jewish name.

I read a book a couple of years ago called HOW THE SCOTS INVENTED THE WORLD AND EVERYTHING THAT"S IN IT.....And was amazed to find that it was all true.

My grandfather was a professional Scotsman. He got his start while travelling for a Scotch paper company in Canada and the States.
He would place ads in the classifieds of small town newspapers which read:
"Is your name Gillies, Macready or Cowan? You could be Scottish. Send a pound to Major Robertson." (He'd never been in the army, but the rank was a good touch in those days.)
....Business was brisk.
