It seems likely that the Boxhead and Roundhead feature I've been rattling on about will happen this year, probably in June.
I'm trying to get a head start on things as my schedule is short and my budget is low.
It is exceedingly surreal to be at this stage.
There will be more news as it comes to hand, but at the moment here's a snapshot of B&R central.
I'm boarding at the moment. Quite roughly, in the hopes that the brevity will make my cuts more efficient.

I've squawked over and over again about the influence of Tove Jansson on my work.
I found this quote from her today.
It reflects entirely my own thoughts, which is probably why I will never have a children's book published.
It's also part of the base philosophy for my Boxhead and Roundhead films.

"In a children’s book there must be a path where the author stands still and the child walks on. A threat or a wonder that is never explained. A face that never shows itself entirely."

I've written about my influences many times on this blog and I shall mention another.

For non-Australians, SBS was a television channel that was started to support the massive influx of migrants to the country.
Foreign folks could find the Greek news, the Italian news, news from Korea - the broadcast from the nation of origin.
Soapies from Israel.
Children's afternoon drama in French.

I recall seeing what I think was the Iranian version of The Nanny during the 80s.
SBS always ran on a low band channel and it wasn't always easy to tune the telly to but if you had rabbit ears or a rooftop aerial pointing in the right direction you could pick it up.

When I was a kid the SBS network played a block of animation for several hours on a Sunday afternoon.
I recall very little about it other than it was, I think 3 or 4 hours worth.
I remember a Japanese cartoon, maybe done in cut-outs, about 7 sea dragons.
And I remember, in particular, a thing called the Yxilon Show which was a kind of low budget Muppet Show.
I've spent years looking for clips and info about it online but haven't ever found a scrap until I realised that I'd been spelling "Yxilon" incorrectly.
A recent search revealed a bunch of clips online.
These clips are all in German but I always thought the show was Russian.
Perhaps someone out there can confirm this.

I watch these clips and can tell why I liked the show.
It seemed extremely foreign and distant to a 7 year old in Australia (the other side of the world).
I knew nobody else was watching it - I'd ask at school - and that was very appealing to me.
To this day I'm also looking for something new, something interesting, something that isn't being played on Saturday morning - I hated those cartoons.
I'm also very receptive to charm and art being combined in children's entertainment - something that is rarely produced in the USA.
So here are some clips.
I recall nothing other than it was hosted by a couple of simply blobby puppets and featured mostly musical numbers.
I could have sworn the show was Russian but it seems to all be in German here.
None of these are subtitled but if you know any Germans they can translate for you.
Enjoy the clips, lah di dah.

The opening titles that include a snippet of music from The Wizard of Oz.
How strange.
At about the 3 minute mark is a lovely bit where a kind of monkey sloth thing plays The Entertainer on the piano.

At the beginning of this clip is a lovely hippo and towards the end an example of my favorite sketch - a recurring bit of business between a spider and a fly.

These are the closing titles.
The names seem mostly German so perhaps it was, after all.
Although maybe it's a German dub of a Russian show...
They are extremely jolly and signified the very end of the SBS international animation afternoon.

I've been posting my students Junior films. This is by Mr Brad Dotson.
It's an affectionate letter to his twin sister. Like many twins, they have a lot in common, yet it's the differences that this film is about.
Brad will be the first to admit that getting this made was like pushing a piano across the beach - hard bloody work.
It's still not entirely the thing we set out to make, but there's an awful lot of him (and obviously his sister) in this.
I am quite sure that Brad will be happy to answer any questions folks may have about this piece.

Uarts Junior Animation and Film Show

Tonight, in a program of animation and film students, animation won.
The culmination of a semesters work was screened at the Uarts Junior Animation and FIlm Show.
The first time any of them had tackled sustained storytelling (they had to be 1:30 to 2:00).
I had a class of fourteen, several of them from my previous semester at Uarts.
I'm sure their classmates won't mind me singling out Sean Glaze's "Fisthead" and Aaron Cowdery's "Da Hood Ass Adventures of Captain Ig'nant".
Both of these films were huge crowd pleasers and the crowd was most definately pleased.
Mr Glaze has animation (and music and a bunch of other talents) dribbling out of his skin and Mr Cowdery is the kind of class act any teacher would be pleased to see toiling away on his film.
Julia Altabef made an ambitious and accomplished multi media monster film "Wrath of Socks" and Mr Samuel Troyer showcased his terrific backgrounds with his Amish zombie film.
One of my favorite students of all time, Anamaria Solis, and my favorite cartoonist in the class, Candice Graham had films that could be described as dogs breakfasts but the crowd responded very well indeed to both of them so what the hell do I know?
Aleson Ho, a terrific illustrator and cartoonist threw together a surreal beastie of a film that I would to have to explain to you all one day.
Adam Murray made a really funny thing about a kid battling an arcade game that would have been even better if he was allowed to have Sean animate it for him (but really, well done matey : ).
Kev Kypers limped over the finish line with the soon to be spectacular "It Is Not A Duck" a smart and funny look at individuals in society.
Rosie Scandell whipped up a sand on glass extravaganza that looked as though she'd worked on it for months.
Bravo, Rosie!
With some encouragement (by which I mean harassment) Mr Dotson made a touching film about his autistic twin that I am sure will find some life online when he's tidied up his credits so they don't run longer than the film itself.
Thank you all for you hard work.
With all your other classes it's astonishing that you got anything done at all.
I hope to see most of your films online soon - feel free to tinker with them before you do.

I LOVE Kung Fu Panda.
It's my favorite big animated feature ever.
I can watch it over and over again.
I am excited that there are 5 more films in the series.

I Was Asked

I was asked by a good fellow on the Facebook why I didn't like a lot of the Pixar films.
This is my response:
A long time ago Pixar made their ...first Toy Story film and it was a good one.
There's a scene in it - the one where Buzz realises he's a toy and plummets down the stairwell.
It's a good scene and a touching one, played smartly for a mainstream animated film.
A Bugs Life didn't really have any of these moments.
Then they made Monsters Inc, and there's that little moment at the end (where Sully finds Boo again) that's again touching and genuine and a nice moment.
Then they made Toy Story 2 and pushed their touching moment even further with the Jessie's Song sequence.
Here they realised they were onto something.
I feel that their consequent films are all about trying to top this meaningful moment rather than making a great, entertaining film.
I don't think anyone walked out of Up saying "Wow - that was so funny and entertaining and witty (or whatever)".
Instead they go on about that cliched and lazy montage at the beginning of the film.
Nobody walked out out of TS3 saying "Wow, l love these characters" they say "Oh, when they nearly died at the end it was really sad".
I understand that these are hugely popular films, so clearly I'm missing something and I'm kind of happy about that.
Quick rundown.
TS1 - Charming, lovely film.
Bugs Life - Great family entertainment with lots of lovely moments.
TS2 - Mostly weird and dull. TS films work best when the Toys are confined to the household, I think.
Monsters Inc - The last Pixar film I really, really enjoy. Last really original thing they did.
Finding Nemo - Sweet film. By now I'm tired of Pixars ensemble cast formula. From here, Pixars films become longer and longer...
The Incredibles - very entertaining, overly long.
Cars - Honest, healthy family entertainment. Not sure why so many people hate this film. At the very least it's better than 100 other shitty films.
Ratatouille - Unbearably long and complicated. The whole Lunguini being puppeted by the rat is such a long and pointless sequence. Stupid tacked on romance. Mostly boring.
Wall-E - Starts of well. Becomes boring satire too quickly. Awful, cheeseball utterly fake ending.
Up - Mostly boring with lots of bad storytelling.
TS3 - Mostly weird and dour. There was a sequel to the film Babe a few years back that was given the same critisism. At least that film is weird and dour and subversive. TS3 is weird and dour and boring.

In short.
My opinion means fuck all.
Enjoy the films.
You'll be much happier that way.

I get grumpy emails from time to time, and for the most part I can understand why some of my drawings might upset people.
I could see from my sitemeter where the fellow was viewing my blog from, and using his email found out who he was.

I have just read an article by a Los Angeles television critic about the Emmy nominations.
I personally couldn't care less about the Emmy's themselves (or any other awards for that matter, unless I'm nominated for something).
His words sum up perfectly my own feelings towards the massively successful string of recent hits in my own industry recently.
I should care to meet this fellow and say "Thank you for expressing everything I've been whining about for so long".

"they are not beloved by me. I don't say this to be contrary or controversial. If anything, I'm in a state of wonderment. It feels odd, critically, to remain so unmoved by things that have moved so many, to be left cold by what warms the multitudes. Do I think that people who like these shows are wrong? I suppose in some way I must, just as I imagine that they would pity my inability to enjoy them, as though I were unable to appreciate the taste of strawberries or the smell of cut grass. … "Modern Family" does not work on me at all. It's as if we existed on different planes, or came from different planets, or that I suffered from some sort of neurological deficit that denatured every joke and feel-good moment."

Nancy Beiman's Animated Performance: Bringing imaginary animal, human and fantasy characters to life.

Nancy Beiman's new book "Animated Performance" should find a place on the bookshelf of anyone who creates character based work, whether it's animation, illustration, comic art, writing or portraiture.
Although written particularly for animators, it is not a technical "how to" book, which should be appealing to non animators.
There's no endless dreary theory either.
It's straight forward information that encourages the artist to think about the characters they are working with or creating.
This may sound obvious, but it's not.
A quick glance at the animation landscape should reveal this.
Further and deeper examination of character, and characters relationship to story will hopefully push us to experiment more and to do better work.
Apart from Nancy's text (which, from the little I know her feels just like her throughout), the book is large and packed full of terrific, wonderful illustrations.
I contributed a couple myself and every one of Nancy's are 163 times better than mine.
There are some birdy dinosaurs that I especially like. I also love the stretchy cats.

A few months back I was asked to contribute a Boxhead and Roundhead illustration to Cura Magazine, an Italian art publication.
Orsola Mileti, the curator, suggested the characters might be trying to escape from the book somehow.
This seemed like a perfectly good idea so I used it.
The cover.

There is a preface page before my illustration that reads the following: There is no way out in the black and white world of Boxhead and Roundhead. Relentlessly bothered in the peacefulness of their house on the hill, interrupted even during their coffee breaks, chased by sea, land and alien monsters, overwhelmed by storms and landslides, attacked by exotic enemies or soldiers armed to the teeth and trapped in the works of some infernal machine. Fascinated by the world they see on TV and by the dreams of their afternoon naps, they are naïve and enthusiastic, hopelessly overwhelmed by reality. When they try to fly, they end up crashing through the roof of their own home. At times self destructive, at others times touchingly ingenuous, inevitably melancholic but drawn with a genuine noir spirit, they stoically keep on surviving through each of their Stressful Adventures. Invited to inhabit the pages of cura. for a brief moment, they find themselves dealing with the mangled and senseless Latin of “Lorem ipsum”.

I have a client function next week and wanted to make a little piece of art for everyone.
I bought these cheap little sketchbooks that seemed heavy enough to take watercolour then splashed them out one after the other.
There're some touch ups with brush pen.
Not all of them are brilliant, but they all have life and energy which is in the spirit of the thing.

Last night at the 41st ASIFA-East Animation Festival I won a few things.
A job I worked on with Dave Levy for The Electric Company won 2nd Place in the Commercial category and my film The Thing In The Distance won an award for Excellence In Design.
I won the same award last year which makes me kind of a Tom Hanks, yeah? No?... Ok...
